The Truth About Low-Calorie Diets (And Why They Waste Your Time)
The Truth About Low- Cal Diets Is Very Simple- They are a waste of time.
You probably know someone who tried them, those famous 500-1000 Calories/day diets.
You watch, listen (and roll your eyes ) at your friend’s enthusiastic plans as he/she embarks on this new attempt to lose weight fast.
Do you feel tempted and afraid to dissuade him and sound like a total hater?
Instead, do you offer encouragement and support, the whole time wishing you could well… dissuade and discourage-what are friends for?
I bet you do!
You see, when people try to lose weight, they are tempted to simply eat less thinking that the less they eat the skinnier they’ll get… and the faster the better.
Fact is, that’s not necessarily true, (unless of course your friend keeps this diet up for long periods of time, in which case he’ll lose more than mere pounds).
Here’s why: Our bodies need sufficient calories to maintain normal life. How many calories do we need? It varies of course, but quite a bit more than 1000.
Your friend COULD technically survive on 1000 calories or less, but he’d be malnourished, weak, and sickly…but, wait…your friend might not mind, after all, it will be for a short time, right?
Do your friend a favor and explain this:
Eating less than 1000 calories will set him him up for a MAJOR binge-fest. Does he know that many food cravings are caused by a deficiency in one or more nutrients? Does he know that many other food cravings are caused by uncomfortable emotions?
Eating fewer than 1000 calories will dangerously decrease his levels of key nutrients, and he’ll feel moody, stressed, fatigued, and deprived, (withdrawals) which immediately will make him start craving bad foods with a vengeance!
You know what will happen next!
Are you seriously going to sit there and let him destroy himself while you laugh all the way to the gym?
While you’re at it, you could tell him that eating less than 1000 calories a day is also a waste of time because of the damage he does to his metabolism, his body immediately goes into survival mode…
OK.. not all THAT dangerous, really. ( This survival mode is known as ketosis, and it’s not all that evil per se, because ketosis serves an important role when a very low carb diet is followed and monitored- more on this will be covered later) to conserve energy and protect vital organ functions.
So what would be the point if he loses a few pounds initially?
As soon as he goes back to a normal calorie intake, he’ll start GAINING weight because now his metabolism is SLOWER than it was before.
Be A Good Friend
Take him to the gym with you, give him a gym membership for his birthday, drag him to the park with you for a jog…Save him from his new, low cal diet disappointment.
He will thank you later…hopefully not too much later
